VARIOUS OF FARMERS COLLECTING DOZENS OF CUT OFF OLIVE BRANCHES FROM GROUNDWEST BANK, PALESTINE - OCT. 24: Palestinians and international solidarity activists harvested olives in the groves of Khirbet Abu Falah, near Ramallah, on Friday, Oct. 24, amid heightened tensions in the occupied West Bank. Israeli soldiers, deployed in armored vehicles, prevented Jewish residents from reaching the area from an unauthorized settlement deemed illegal even under Israeli law. Dozens of activists from the U.K., Italy, Spain, and other countries, as well as from Israel, joined Palestinians in the harvest. Witnesses said Israelis who had seized nearby land monitored the activity with a drone flown from a hilltop position. Palestinians arriving at their groves found dozens of olive trees cut down, allegedly by extremist settlers. Farmer Samir Shuman told Anadolu that settlers, under army protection, cut down nearly all the trees in his field, leaving only one standing. He vowed to remain on his land and restore it, saying villagers had only recently regained access after years of restrictions due to surrounding settlements. According to the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, illegal Israeli settlers have carried out more than 7,000 attacks against Palestinians and their property in the West Bank since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023. These include 158 assaults targeting olive pickers since the beginning of this month. Commission head Muayyad Shaaban said in an Oct. 21 statement that this year’s olive harvest has been “the hardest in decades,” citing widespread Israeli restrictions designating farmlands as “closed military zones.” The olive harvest is a vital source of income for thousands of Palestinian families. According to the Agriculture Ministry, this year’s yield is among the weakest in decades, with production estimated at only 15% of the average level. The ministry said Palestine produced about 27,300 tons of olive oil in 2024, up from just 10,000 tons in 2023.
