CONNOLLY SPEAKING ON STAGE AFTER HER VICTORY DUBLIN, IRELAND - OCT. 25: Catherine Connolly, candidate of the left and supporters of Irish unity, won Ireland’s presidential election, defeating rival Heather Humphreys to become the country’s 10th president. Voting took place from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time on Friday, Oct. 24, with counting beginning the following morning. According to official results, Connolly secured 63.4% of the votes, while Humphreys received 29.5%. Jim Gavin, backed by Prime Minister Martin’s party but who had withdrawn after a rent scandal, still appeared on the ballot and gained 7.2%. Connolly will take office on Nov. 11, becoming Ireland’s third female president. Ireland elected its first woman president, Mary Robinson, in 1990 and remains the first country in the world where one female president was succeeded by another, Mary McAleese, who served from 1997 to 2011. Connolly has pledged to advance social dialogue toward Irish unification and address housing and welfare issues, even beyond the traditional powers of the presidency.
