A meeting commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China was held in Beijing on Saturday, the first Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration. Delivering a speech at the event, Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, called for efforts to unite Chinese people at home and abroad to jointly create enduring prosperity for the Chinese nation and write a new chapter of glory in its history. The victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and Taiwan's restoration to China are shared glories for the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, Wang said, adding that the establishment of the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration by the Party and the state will undoubtedly inspire compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to inherit and carry forward the tradition of patriotism and the great spirit of the war of resistance, and strive together to achieve the complete reunification of the motherland and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Wang called on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to jointly shoulder the historic responsibilities of promoting the national spirit centered on patriotism, safeguarding the common home of the Chinese nation, advancing the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Efforts should be made to uphold the principles of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems", stay committed to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, jointly safeguard the great achievements of the victory in the war of resistance, and jointly advance the great cause of national reunification, Wang said, stressing that there should be absolutely no space left for separatist activities in any form. He also called for efforts to deepen cross-Strait exchanges and integration, jointly forge a sense of the Chinese nation as one community, and unite compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to jointly advance the glorious cause of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Li Ganjie, a member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and head of United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee, presided over the event.
