After nearly five years, direct commercial flights between India and China have officially resumed. On Sunday night, IndiGo relaunched its Kolkata–Guangzhou service, marking a significant step in restoring post-pandemic and post-border tension connectivity.

The first A320 Neo flight departed from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 10 p.m. with 176 passengers onboard.

Direct flights between the two countries were operational until early 2020 but were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent eastern Ladakh border tensions.

To commemorate the occasion, a small ceremony was held at the Kolkata airport, where passengers joined officials from IndiGo and the Airports Authority of India in lighting a ceremonial lamp — symbolizing renewed friendship and cooperation between India and China.

Airport Director P.R. Beuria said the revival of this route would strengthen business and tourism links while improving convenience for travelers between the two cities.

Officials also noted that the daily non-stop service will enhance Kolkata’s standing as a key international aviation hub in eastern India.
