A drug-addled girlfriend reportedly lived with her boyfriend's corpse for five days, believing he was just asleep.

Yanuporn Teerakiat, 40, called an ambulance to seek help for her boyfriend, Khanakorn Phiknathee, 38, whom she claimed had been unconscious for the past five days.

Medics rushed to the couple's home in Nonthaburi, central Thailand, on October 17, and were immediately hit with the stench of the decaying body.

They went inside the two-storey residence, only to discover the man's half-naked corpse bloated and rotting on the floor.

Police said they were notified at 8:30 am local time. They arrived at the scene, where a visibly distressed Yanuporn was waiting to be questioned.

She allegedly said: 'This morning, I noticed that he hadn't woken up in five days. I didn't know what was wrong with him, so I called an ambulance to take him to the hospital because I didn't dare wake him.

'While he was asleep, I smelled a foul odor in the house, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from.'

Neighbours said the couple had been living together for several years and were notorious drug addicts.

One local said: 'Due to their drug addiction, they were often erratic and loud, so no one dared to interfere. They even once tried to set the house on fire, but the villagers managed to put it out.

'No one knows the cause of the man's death or what underlying health conditions he had, as no one wanted to get involved. Even his family had cut him off, leaving him to live with his girlfriend in the house.'

The couple had reportedly been receiving treatment at a local hospital, but allegedly continued consuming narcotics.

Authorities said they have collected evidence and photos from the scene.

Khanakorn's body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem exam to determine the cause of death.

Just last week, a blind German pensioner unknowingly lived alongside his Thai wife's body after she allegedly took her own life in their rented home in Chachoengsao.

Jurgen Wolfgang Walter Sadler, 79, was searching for his Thai wife Nisara Bunchuay, 53, all day before she was found hanged from the stair railings by a neighbour.

Police believe the taxi driver and breadwinner was driven to despair by financial stress after a car accident left her facing a 40,000-baht demand.
