Youths dressed as devils and ghouls to join an anti-corruption rally in the Philippines.

Hundreds of young protesters, led by Youth Against Kurakot (Youth Against Corruption), gathered at the EDSA People Power Monument in Metro Manila on Saturday, October 25.

Youth Against Kurakot Lead Convenor and Akbayan Youth Secretary General Khylla Meneses said the Halloween-themed action was meant to highlight the horrors of rampant corruption in the country.

Khylla said: 'The corrupt are much like the monsters in folk tales. They both lurk in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to take advantage of the people.'

The organisers encouraged youth and students to join the larger mobilisation on November 30 for the 'Trillion Peso March'.

Similar protests erupted across the country as fury mounted over anomalous flood control projects in the perennially storm-battered nation.

They followed revelations by construction contractor Sarah Discaya, who told the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee that she owns 28 luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Maybach, Bentley, and Mercedes G63.

At least 15 contractors are now under investigation after cornering a combined 545 billion PHP (approximately 7.63 billion GBP) program budget.

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr - himself the son of a dictator who was found to have stolen an eye-watering 10 billion USD from the country - has ordered a probe into the questionable projects, as well as lifestyle checks on politicians.

But he has struggled to shake off the corruption-by-association, raising questions of whether any meaningful reform can happen.

Even the president's mother, Imelda Marcos, is best known for her indulgent lifestyle, included a sprawling collection of designer shoes that were amassed while her husband was in power.

The Philippines was plunged into debt following the bloody two-decade rule of dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., with his reign marked by rampant human rights violations against critics before he was deposed in 1986.
