South Africa: China’s AI empowers South Africa railway’s transformation
Storyline: AI technologies provided by a Chinese company have facilitated the transformation of South Africa's hundred-year-old railway system. Regarded as one of the most beautiful railway routes in South Africa, the line connecting Cape Town and its Simon's Town winds tightly along the oceanfront. Apart from sightseeing, it is also a daily ride for many commuters. The affordable and convenient trains have become the preferred mode of transportation for residents traveling between the city and the town. "It's actually cheaper, and it's actually more reliable than a taxi, because with where I work, I always have to be in the office before eight a.m., whereas when I was taking a taxi I'd be 5 minutes late, 10 minutes late, but with the train consistently I would arrive at eight or before eight," said a bank clerk while on her morning commute. With a history of over a hundred years, the South African railway network previously faced multiple challenges like theft, intrusion, high maintenance costs and delayed emergency response. To address these issues, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa partnered with a Chinese technology company starting in late 2022 to embark on an intelligent railway transformation powered by artificial intelligence and large-scale model technology. AI-powered visual monitoring and response system that uses video recognition and sensor data can detect intrusions, foreign objects, and risks in real time. Meanwhile, train timetable, passenger flow prediction, dynamic adjustment of ticket sales, security surveillance and emergency response have been improved using the technology. Passengers are able to access more precise train status updates and minimize wait times. For daily riders and travelers seeking seaside scenery, the result has been safer, more convenient trips.
