VARIOUS OF PEOPLE CASTING THEIR VOTESBOGOTA, COLOMBIA - OCT. 26, 2025: Senator Iván Cepeda won the internal primary of the Historic Pact, the ruling coalition supporting President Gustavo Petro. Cepeda defeated former Health Minister Carolina Corcho to become the coalition’s presidential candidate for the May 2026 elections. The vote took place amid security incidents in rural areas that disrupted polling. Cepeda is widely known as the leftist senator who played a key role in bringing former right-wing president Alvaro Uribe Velez to trial in a long-running witness tampering case often described as Colombia’s “trial of the century.” Uribe was recently acquitted of all charges by an appeals court, overturning an earlier 12-year prison sentence. Uribe, who led Colombia from 2002 - 2010, remains the most prominent opposition figure to Petro’s administration.
