Woman mistakes accelerator for brake sending car crashing into convenience store in China
At 5:19 p.m. on 22 October, in Jiangxia District, Wuhan, Hubei Province, a white car suddenly veered onto the pavement and crashed straight into a convenience store on Yangqiaohu Avenue.
According to the shop owner, Ms Deng, her husband was sitting behind the counter when he heard a loud bang outside and reacted just in time to dodge the oncoming vehicle. At the time, a man and a mother with her young daughter were walking along the pavement. Fortunately, the man ran forward to safety, and the mother quickly grabbed her child to avoid the car.
After the crash, the female driver hurriedly got out to check the situation. Inside the shop, snacks and bottled water were scattered across the floor, and a refrigerator by the entrance had been knocked out of place, leaving the scene in chaos.
The driver explained that she had forgotten to apply the handbrake, and when the car began to roll, she panicked and accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, sending the car into the shop. Police later determined that the woman was fully responsible for the accident.
Ms Deng estimated the damage at more than 30,000 yuan but was thankful no one was hurt. The driver has since filed an insurance claim, and compensation is currently being negotiated.
