Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm of the 2025 Atlantic season, reached Category 5 intensity with sustained winds exceeding 165 mph after rapid intensification. The hurricane made direct landfall near Montego Bay on October 28, bringing life-threatening 13-foot storm surges and gusts surpassing 300 km/h, according to NOAA data.
