An accident involving eight vehicles — including a truck carrying sulfuric acid — caused a chemical spill and shut down kilometer 11 of the Rodoanel Mário Covas, near Barueri, in the Greater São Paulo area, on Tuesday afternoon (28).
According to the Fire Department, the unit was called around 12:30 p.m. to respond to the incident. The spilled substance contaminated the sewage network, requiring five specialized response vehicles at the scene. The crash occurred inside Tunnel 2, in the direction of São Bernardo do Campo, and involved a utility vehicle, two cars, three trucks, and a semi-truck loaded with hazardous material.
CCR RodoAnel, the company that manages the highway, reported that the outer lane remains completely closed and that traffic congestion extends for approximately nine kilometers. Rescue and operations teams are working to contain the leak, transfer the material, and safely reopen the road.
In a statement, Cetesb (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo) said that its teams are on-site, working together with other agencies and responsible companies to ensure the safety of people and the environment.
So far, there have been no reports of serious injuries. Traffic remains blocked in the area, and drivers are advised to avoid the region.
