Melissa, the fifth major hurricane of the season, rapidly intensified to 160 mph winds before striking Jamaica — the island’s strongest storm this century. Its slow 7 mph forward movement caused extensive flooding and widespread damage.
Officials reported low compliance with evacuation orders, heightening danger for residents. The storm has since weakened to Category 2 while moving toward Cuba, with early reports indicating power outages and significant infrastructure disruption across affected areas.
