SOUTHGATE, Mich. — Dozens of police officers and firefighters are being credited with saving every resident from a large fire at the American House assisted living facility on October 24, 2025.

At approximately 10:06 p.m., Southgate police and fire crews responded to reports of the structure fire at 16333 Allen Road. In total, 39 police officers from 11 agencies and firefighters from 14 departments converged on the scene as flames spread and smoke filled the building.

Many of the residents inside had limited mobility and could not evacuate without assistance. First responders, many without fire-protective gear or oxygen equipment, entered the burning building to carry residents to safety. All occupants were rescued, and there were no fatalities, an outcome officials say was only possible due to the coordinated and courageous efforts of responders.

Southgate officials said a full debrief will be conducted to review lessons learned, including emergency vehicle positioning, but emphasized that the priority now is recognizing the heroism displayed.

“These men and women acted with extreme courage,” the department said. “Their selfless actions saved lives.”
