South Korea: Chinese President Xi addresses Session I of 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting
[Voiceover] On Friday morning, APEC leaders gathered at the Hwabaek International Convention Center in Gyeongju. Chinese President Xi Jinping was warmly welcomed by ROK President Lee Jae-myung as the session began. In his speech, President Xi highlighted that over the past three decades, APEC has driven the Asia-Pacific to the forefront of global economic growth. He warned that the world is now facing unprecedented changes and uncertainties, and stressed that APEC must pull together to promote growth, improve people's lives, and champion open development despite turbulent times. The Chinese president put forward a five-point proposal to strengthen regional economic cooperation and development. First, safeguard the multilateral trading system. The WTO's authority must be strengthened, and trade rules must be updated to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. Second, build an open economic environment. APEC must promote trade and investment liberalization, fiscal and financial cooperation, and regional integration. This includes aligning free trade agreements such as the RCEP and CPTPP to advance the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific. Third, maintain the stability of industrial and supply chains. Expanding common interests, and enhancing physical, institutional and people-to-people connectivity are key to open development in the region. Fourth, advance digital and green transformation. Technology must be harnessed to remove barriers, boost trade, and deepen cooperation in green industries and clean energy. Fifth, promote universally beneficial and inclusive development. Imbalances must be addressed and sustainable globalization should be fostered. China will pursue high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative with various parties to achieve common prosperity. President Xi Jinping also reaffirmed China's commitment to an open world economy. He cited the Recommendations for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan from 2026, which China will take as an opportunity to deepen reform, expand high-standard opening up, and create new opportunities for the Asia-Pacific and the world.
