China's adoption of a 30-day visa-free policy has made Shanghai a popular weekend getaway choice for people in neighboring countries. Tourists from the Republic of Korea and Japan have been enjoying the delights of Shanghai thanks to the policy. "Not only has it got great Eastern charm. There's also a touch of the West. Many people here are at the forefront of global trends," said Park Jiyeon, a tourist from the ROK. "Since coming to Shanghai, I've discovered a bigger, wider world. I wanted to learn how Shanghai people live," said another tourist from the ROK named Park Kyutae. "Shanghai people are super friendly! They'll tell you anything, if you ask," said Sakamoto Mina, a Japanese tourist. "It's so convenient now, with visa-free entry. Whenever you feel like coming here, all you need is a plane ticket. I highly recommend Shanghai for a visit," said Park Jiyeon. As of early June 2025, China had unilaterally granted visa-free entry to 43 countries, signed mutual visa exemption agreements with 29 countries, and offered 240-hour visa-free transit to travelers from 54 countries. China is happy to extend a warm welcome to visitors from all over the world, reflecting the ancient saying, "It is such a delight to have friends coming from afar."
