GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 1: The heavily damaged residence of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has become an unlikely shelter for the displaced Abu Salim family amid ongoing hostilities in Gaza.

The family fled their home in Beit Lahia under intense Israeli bombardment. Ashraf Nafiz Abu Salim described their escape as occurring on a day reminiscent of the apocalypse, saying they left everything behind in their desperate flight from death.

The family eventually sought refuge in Arafat's former home, which served as his base between 1995 and 2001.

Abu Salim expressed that the extensive damage to the property represented deliberate destruction aimed at erasing Palestinian identity. He described the house as an important symbol of unity and freedom for the Palestinian people.
Despite the destruction, the family has been clearing rubble to make the structure minimally habitable.

Abu Salim, who holds a master's degree in Israeli studies, noted that the surrounding area, once filled with universities and cultural centers, has been largely destroyed.

He emphasized that Arafat's house was more than just a building - it represented Palestine itself and served as a gathering place for intellectuals and cultural events before the war.

Among the ruins, Abu Salim found solace in the remains of the house's library, reading works about Arafat's life and Palestinian history. This reading material, he said, provided him with an inner sanctuary and helped sustain him through the current crisis.

Abu Salim added hat the conflict has demonstrated Palestinians' deep connection to their land, vowing that they would continue to exist there despite the destruction. He maintained that Palestinians would not surrender what he called the "weapon of resistance," describing it as the final balancing factor in their relationship with Israel.
