An author from China's Taiwan region has devoted almost half his life to researching the story of a young man who traveled from Taiwan to Chongqing in the mainland in the 1940s to support the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The writer, Lan Bozhou, was ultimately able to unwind the true journey of his protagonist, Wu Sihan. Originally Wu Tiaohe, Wu Sihan was born in 1924 during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. He was an outstanding student who received his school's highest awards. In 1943, he left Taiwan to study in Japan, dreaming of earning a professional qualification and returning to the mainland. After less than a year in Japan, in December 1943, 19-year-old Wu Sihan decided to give up his studies and travel back to China to fight alongside the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Following Taiwan's restoration in 1945, Wu recounted his wartime experience in an article, "1,000 Miles in Search of the Motherland". In 1950, he sacrificed his life trying to advance the island's liberation. In 1987, Lan first heard the name Wu Sihan in an interview with Lin Shuyang, the longest-serving political prisoner in Taiwan. Since then, he has been researching this young Chinese patriot's remarkable, inspirational and ultimately tragic story, which had been forgotten by history. In the summer of 2025, a film crew from China Global Television Network (CGTN) spent 20 days accompanying Lan as he traced the footsteps of Wu Sihan. A series of clues eventually led Lan to Wu Tiaohong, who revealed the location of his elder brother's ashes. Standing before Wu Sihan's last resting place, Lan spoke a few words of remembrance and commemoration. "Elder Wu, we, the younger generation, have finally found you. We have written down your story. We've come to pay our respects to you. You've waited far too long," he said. In Lan's view, Wu Sihan's sacrifice must not be forgotten. "He lived from 1924 to 1950. He was an outstanding man of Taiwan. For the sake of Taiwan's future, he joined the motherland's fight in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Later, for the sake of the liberation of all China, he gave up his life without hesitation," said the author in the CGTN documentary. "And yet, all he got in return from the public, especially the public in Taiwan, had been hatred, neglect and erasure [from history]. Even though we witnessed the success of the [Communist Party of China-led] revolution in the mainland which lead to the founding of the People's Republic of China, no one knew of him. History has wronged him. Now, at last, we've come to the place where he was laid to rest. I can only say to him: Elder Wu, you have waited too long, but we are finally here. History will no longer forget him and his comrades, and will forever remember their sacrifice and contributions," he said. SHOTLIST: FILE: Tainan City, Taiwan, China - May-Aug 2025 1.
