China: AI-powered products draw global buyers at Canton Fair
Chinese exporters are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) as a means to upgrade products and build transformative business models, drawing strong interest from global buyers at the ongoing 138th China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair. The autumn Canton Fair, which opened on Oct 15 in Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong in south China, has attracted a record high of more than 32,000 exhibitors. It runs until Nov 4 in three phases. During the third phase, which runs from Oct 31 to Nov 4, an adorable toy embedded with a large language model has captured the attention of international buyers with its debut. "In the past year or two, we've developed this desktop robot powered by an AI large model. It has a display that can show different facial expressions and talk with children in real time, offering them companionship and emotional support," said Li Weiqun, an exhibitor. "It (our purchase) will be no less than 2,000 pieces, because this one actually has a very good demand in our country. So I believe we'll be able to sell a lot from that," said an overseas buyer. Beyond forming the basis for eye-catching products, artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming every part of China's export sector -- from production and marketing to customer engagement. With AI tools, exporters are shifting from manually finding clients to acquiring them through intelligent systems. "For the entire export sector, it (AI) represents a disruptive leap in efficiency. I think it's closely aligned with China's call to develop new quality productive forces," said Huang Junqiang, another exhibitor. Established in 1957, the Canton Fair is held twice a year in spring and autumn. It is the longest-running of several comprehensive international trade events in China, and has been hailed as the barometer of China's foreign trade.
