Homes shook as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, leaving at least 20 people dead.

CCTV footage shows the moment the tremors struck Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, a short while ago.

The densely populated city has more than 500,000 people, many of whom rushed to the streets as the quake rattled their homes.

The United States Geological Survey said the tremor struck 22 kilometres off the town of Khulm in northern Afghanistan at 1 am local time. It had a magnitude of 6.3 and a depth of 28 kilometres (17 miles).

The Taliban health ministry said more than 20 were killed and 320 were injured, with casualties expected to rise amid rescue efforts.

Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes as it lies on top of fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge.
