5. PALESTINIAN WOMAN MIRFET SALAMA AND HER CHILD WALKING AROUND TENT KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 3: In the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, a Palestinian mother of six, Mirfet Salama, is struggling to survive beside the ruins of her home destroyed in Israeli attacks.

Having returned to what remains of her house, Salama has set up a makeshift tent next to the rubble, where she lives with her children under harsh conditions.

She spends her days searching through the debris for her children’s clothes and any usable items, while also caring for her disabled daughter.

“No matter how bad things are here, it’s still better than being by the sea,” she said. “Conditions there are much worse, and there is no safe place anywhere.”

Salama added that her children have grown accustomed to playing with metal and stones among the debris, as she continues to break through the shattered walls with a hammer — hoping to salvage pieces of their former life.

Israel has killed more than 68,800 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,600 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.
