PARIS, FRANCE - NOV. 4: Hundreds of railway workers gathered in Paris on Tuesday, Nov. 4, to protest as a prominent trade union representative was summoned for police questioning in connection with a recent protest action.
The demonstrators assembled in front of a police station in the 12th arrondissement, expressing solidarity with Fabien Villedieu, a federal secretary of the SUD-Rail union.
Villedieu addressed the protesters during the rally, before heading to the police station for questioning.
The protest was organized after Villedieu was called in for a "free hearing" scheduled for November 4.
According to the union and French media, the summons is related to the invasion of the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance, located in the Bercy district, during a strike on September 18.
The newspaper Libération, which claims to have consulted the summons, reported that Villedieu is to be questioned for "intrusion into premises or enclosed land relevant to national defense."
Protesters chanted slogans against what they termed the "criminalization of trade unionism" and demanded the protection of workers' rights.
Police implemented extensive security measures in the area, and the demonstration concluded without any incidents.
In a statement released on Wednesday, October 29, the SUD-Rail union condemned the police summons. The union stated that its "colleague and comrade in the struggle is summoned... to answer for the invasion of the Bercy ministry."
SUD-Rail accused the government of using "repression" and "intimidation" to silence dissenting voices. The union emphasized that the intrusion into the ministry was "intended to be symbolic, peaceful, and did not result in any damage to public property."
