A chilling scene caught on camera: thick black smoke towering into the evening sky as a UPS cargo jet crashes near the runway at the Louisville hub. The post shows real-time footage from a nearby home of a United Parcel Service (UPS) MD-11 that crashed shortly after take-off around 5:15 p.m. local time on November 4, 2025. The aircraft, operating as Flight 2976 and meant to fly from Louisville to Honolulu, is reported to have three crew members on board.
According to officials, the crash triggered a massive fireball and thick smoke that spread across the industrial area adjacent to the airport, damaging nearby buildings including a petroleum recycling facility and prompting an immediate shelter-in-place order for a five-mile radius around the airport. At least four people have been confirmed dead and 11 others injured, some with very severe injuries; the toll may rise as rescue operations continue.
The aviation authorities — Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board — have launched an investigation with the NTSB leading the probe. Among the key questions: why the three-engine MD-11 failed shortly after take-off and how the left-wing engine fire observed in early footage fits in. Local authorities report the airfield remains closed, UPS operations at the hub are disrupted, and the community is in shock—this is a facility that handles hundreds of daily flights and processes hundreds of thousands of parcels.
