Passenger train slams into goods train, sparks nationwide concern over rail safety, 6 fatalities reported
Train services in the Bilaspur division were disrupted following the incident. Operations on the main down line resumed at 6:16 p.m., while restoration work on other affected routes continued for a longer duration.
The incident occurred around 4 pm on November 4, near Bilaspur station, in northern India's Chhattisgarh.
Visuals show that NDRF personnel, along with local police, were engaged in clearing debris from the site while rescuers carefully lifted the injured onto stretchers for evacuation. The coordinated effort continued amid tense scenes as authorities worked swiftly to manage the aftermath.
Speaking to Newslions, Deepankur Nath, District Commandant Disaster Management, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, stated that the passenger train was heading to Bilaspur from Gevra when it rammed into the stationary goods train from behind, causing significant damage to the passenger coaches.
Rescue operations are underway, with senior railway officials and state government officers rushing to the scene to supervise the relief efforts. The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, and medical teams are providing assistance. Railway helplines have been set up to help passengers and their families.
The Railway Ministry has announced compensation for the victims' families, including ₹10 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed grief over the accident and instructed the Bilaspur District Collector to provide all possible assistance and relief.
A detailed inquiry will be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to ascertain the cause of the accident and recommend preventive measures. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest that the passenger train may have passed a signal in danger.
Several trains have been rescheduled or cancelled due to the accident, and railway officials are working to restore normal services as soon as possible. The Bilaspur-Tatanagar Express, scheduled to depart Bilaspur at 18:50 hrs, has been delayed by three hours.
Leaders, including TMC Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee and Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh, have expressed condolences and support for the victims' families. The state government is monitoring the situation with utmost diligence and sensitivity.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of ensuring railway safety and adhering to protocols to prevent such accidents. As the investigation progresses, authorities will work to identify the root cause and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
