A temporary structure housing hundreds refuges was burnt to the ground after a fire broke out amidst strong winds.

The devastating fire, fuelled by strong winds, completely destroyed a temporary shelter in Cape Town housing hundreds of refugees.

The blaze reportedly started in the kitchen area, rapidly engulfing the entire structure despite desperate attempts to extinguish it. Residents, relocated during the COVID-19 pandemic after protesting at the UNHCR, are now homeless, with the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management and Gift of the Givers providing urgent assistance.
