This is the spectacular moment fireworks illuminated the night sky in northern India as worshippers celebrated the Dev Diwali festival.

Footage shows an ‘eco-friendly' aerial display and a vibrant laser show lighting up the city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on the evening of November 5.

Thousands of earthen lamps, or diyas, were lit along the ghats of the Ganges River, creating a breathtaking spectacle symbolising devotion and divine light.

Dev Deepawali, also known as the ‘Diwali of the Gods', is a major festival observed primarily in Varanasi. It is celebrated on the full moon night of Kartik Poornima, around 15 days after Diwali - the Hindu festival of lights - and marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura.

Last month, air quality in the Indian capital plunged during Diwali celebrations, as fireworks filled the skies and pushed pollution levels into the ‘red zone' across much of the city.

Despite a Supreme Court ruling that allowed only green crackers to be used between 8 pm and 10 pm local time, firework activity continued beyond the permitted window, worsening the smog.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that 36 of 38 air monitoring stations in Delhi recorded pollution levels in the ‘very poor' to ‘severe' range.

Meteorologists have since carried out cloud-seeding tests over Delhi to trigger artificial rain in hopes of reducing the city's rising pollution levels.
