Stay at home mom works out her free labor is worth a salary of $270k
A woman has worked out that if she was paid for her role as a stay-at-home mom she would earn $270k a year.
Vanessa Taylor, 38, says the fees for caregiving and chores work out at an hourly rate of $31.
The mom-of-four estimated the amount for a hypothetical annual invoice she presented to her husband, Jefferson, 52.
She says she would charge $15,000 in "frustration fees" which includes repeating herself to her children and "surviving chaos" on a daily basis. "
Further charges include $12,000 "mental load management" and "emotional support and relationship maintenance" would cost her husband $8,000. "
Vanessa posted a video outlining her proposed charges without letting Jefferson know and says he was "surprised" when he watched it. "
Vanessa, a registered nurse and stay-at-home mum from Sparta, New Jersey, USA, said: "It really started off just being funny and just having fun with it. "
"It was a little motherhood humour but just about the cost of what it is to be a stay-at-home mum. "
"I wanted to reflect the real mental, emotional and physical effect of caregiving, so raising small children and a newborn. "
"I was going through what that would actually look like in numbers but it's also very real. "
"If you were to bring someone from the outside to do all these services there would be payment. "
"I added a few extra things like frustration fees - adding some ‘mom tax' so to speak. "
"I think that the reaction has been incredible because so many people are able to relate saying that ‘it's not enough' or ‘you didn't charge enough for this'. "
"I just didn't think it would resonate with as many moms as it did. "
"Everyone knows it's a joke and I'm not charging my husband real money, but it puts number on it." "
Vanessa and Jefferson met through their jobs in healthcare and began their family in 2020 – having children Kira, five, Kalib, three, Kayla, two and Kyla, one-month-old.
Having shared her motherhood humour tips online since 2020 Vanessa has "been able to be a sense of community of moms". "
She has also found some men reacting to her online invoice stating they "might even owe some serious backpay". "
But many parents have resonated and some have called for items on the list to be doubled.
As for husband Jefferson, the clip was a complete surprise.
Vanessa said: "When he saw it he was like, ‘What? How much do I owe you?' "
"We kind of laughed about it. "
"He does appreciate and value everything I do."
"He agrees we deserve so much more recognition and appreciation for what we do. "
"He is paying his debt back to me in iced coffees, foot rubs and eternal gratitude." "
Vanessa's proposed yearly invoice:
Three home cooked meals per day for three children at $120 per day: $43,800
