Lewes, United Kingdom - November 05, 2025 Lewes – A video recorded by X user Ines captures the atmosphere as thousands gathered for one of the country’s largest bonfire celebrations. On Wednesday (November 5), an estimated 40,000 people attended the Lewes Bonfire festivities. The historic event, organised by seven bonfire societies, opened with a torch-led procession. Several effigies were carried through the town, including Kier Starmer, Donald Trump, Pope Paul V, and Elon Musk. Each society also operated its own bonfire site after the procession, with some locations requiring tickets for entry. Visitors marked the annual tradition and its meaning for the community. Burning crosses were carried in remembrance of the 17 Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in the town. Speaking to The Argus, Anne and Gavin Blake-Coggins, councillors for Wealden District Council, visited the celebration for the first time since their children were young. Anne said: “I think it's important to keep the tradition alive, because it is so unique to Sussex. I'm from Wales, and we've never had anything like this, So I think it's amazing, I say it brings people together.”
