Drivers were left stranded as Super Typhoon Fung-wong lashed waves onto a seaside road in the Philippines.

Footage shows motorists navigating through the deluge as rough waters crashed into the shore in Aurora province, on November 9.

Resident Cheryll Avellaneda said: 'All trips to Manila have been cancelled. The typhoon isn't here yet in Baler, but the waves are already so strong. It's very scary. I hope everyone stays safe.'

Fung-wong is the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, with a 1,600-kilometre (994 miles) rain and wind band that covered nearly two-thirds of the archipelagic nation.

Locally known as 'Uwan', it made landfall as a super typhoon in Aurora province on the evening of November 9, prompting the evacuation of nearly a million residents.

The Office of Civil Defense said at least two people were killed while 500,000 were displaced in the onslaught as Fung-wong triggered large storm surges and widespread flooding.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon has weakened as it exited the main island Luzon. Fung-wong was churning over the South China Sea and is predicted to move towards Taiwan.

The storm is the 21st to batter the Philippines this year. It struck immediately after Typhoon Kalmaegi which killed 224 people and five in Vietnam.

The Philippines is prone to typhoons because it lies along the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean within the typhoon belt, where tropical storms frequently form and intensify.
