A little dachshund whose back legs were paralysed by a degenerative condition still loves to go on walks with his siblings - from the comfort of his pram.

Spirited Monty, seven, was left unable to walk after the sudden onset

IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), where the cushioning discs between a dog's vertebrae deteriorate.

Owner Anna Cusack, 42, noticed that Monty had stopped moving around a year ago and was in pain.

She took him to the vet and discovered he had IVDD, which caused his back two legs to become paralysed.

But the tiny dog has never let his paralysis slow him down and now he loves to go on walks with his siblings by bouncing up and down in his pram.

Anna, a social worker from Prince Edward Island, Canada, said: "It's been great seeing his personality continue to shine through."

"Luckily we were able to help treat the IVDD so it's not causing him as much pain regularly."

"But the impact on his back legs was already done."

Anna got Monty when he was just five months old whilst looking for a sibling for her other Dachshund Lola.

Anna knew Dachshunds are predisposed to IVDD, but the onset of Monty's condition was very sudden and seemingly without cause.

The energetic dachshund was just six years old when Anna noticed him suddenly stop playing in the yard, sitting still and refusing to move.

A trip to the vet confirmed the devastating news.

Anna added: "He stopped playing, sat still and wouldn't come to me. "

"He was in pain so I carried him in and tried to help him get comfortable. "

"There was no traumatic event or fall, it just seemed to happen. "

"He was treated with medication and strict crate rest for 10 weeks. "

"He was treated with red light therapy and acupuncture as well."

"After the crate rest, he did not regain the use of his back legs."

Determined to keep Monty included in family life, Anna began experimenting with ways for him to move around safely.

She purchased a pram and it quickly became Monty's favourite way to get about.

Anna said: "I took him outside for his first walk in the pram after crate rest- it was his first walk in three months. "

"He bounced like mad the entire time. "

"I tried to discourage it at first, used to keeping him quiet, then I figured there was no point in even trying. "

"He also still loves to explore and sniff outside. "

Monty also enjoys using a dog wheelchair or having his legs supported with a scarf so he can run alongside his siblings.

Despite his condition, his zest for life is undiminished.

Anna said: "Monty loves to be included in any excitement, and his back legs not working does not stop him."
