Terrified passengers prayed as a plane flew through Super Typhoon Fung-wong in the Philippines.

The Philippine Airlines flight battled through the raging storm as it set off from Aklan province to the capital, Manila, on Sunday.

Footage shows the aircraft's wing flaps shuddering as flight PR0246 traversed dark skies.

Passengers were heard crying as they clutched their seats throughout the perilous journey onboard the Airbus A320.

They applauded in relief as the plane touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 4:29 pm local time, applauding the pilot for safely navigating the rough weather.

Passenger April Rica Atienza said she and her friends pushed through with their travel plans as the flight was not cancelled despite Fung-wong looming off the country's coast.

She said: 'While waiting for take off, everyone in the plane, friends and strangers alike, were silent. We were all feeling the plane shaking as if there was a quake inside.

'I usually sleep on planes til landing, but this time, I documented everything just in case and to take my mind off the what ifs. At every bump, children cried and adults cursed. I was at the window seat so I can see how the flaps and wings of the plane were struggling. It was zero visibility. My heart was in my throat the entire time. I prayed. Hard.

'When we landed, people laughed and cheered. Some cried. Me? As soon as I disembarked, I walked briskly and searched for my friends. Then I saw them and walked faster. I embraced every single one. An experience like this makes one realize how precious life and time are.'

Fung-wong is the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, with a 1,600-kilometre (994 miles) rain and wind band that covered nearly two-thirds of the archipelagic nation.

Locally known as 'Uwan', it made landfall as a super typhoon in Aurora province on the evening of November 9, prompting the evacuation of nearly a million residents.

The Office of Civil Defense said at least 18 people were killed while 2.4 million were displaced in the onslaught as Fung-wong triggered large storm surges and widespread flooding.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon has weakened as it exited the main island Luzon. Fung-wong was churning over the South China Sea and is predicted to move towards Taiwan.

The storm struck immediately after Typhoon Kalmaegi hammered the Philippines, killing 224 people.

The Philippines is prone to typhoons because it lies along the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean within the typhoon belt, where tropical storms frequently form and intensify.
