Goods coming to Gaza insufficient, unaffordable
Storyline: Goods coming to Gaza are insufficient and unaffordable to ordinary people even one month after the peace agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas. The shortage of supplies within Gaza persists due to Israeli military restrictions on the opening of crossings and access to aid. In a market near Shati refugee camp, vendors display neatly arranged fruits and vegetables in vibrant colors. At first glance, the scene suggests normalcy. But behind the stalls, most shoppers are only window-shoppers as the prices of vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes are still three to five times higher than before the war. The essential things such as eggs, chicken and red meat are unaffordable to ordinary people. "The goods sent here are neither sufficient nor affordable. People are exhausted, and life is extremely hard. Even though prices have dropped a bit after the ceasefire, people still cannot afford them, and the situation remains unrelieved," said Nidal, a local resident. "It is regrettable that Israel controls the import of supplies. Items with high nutrition are restricted, such as eggs and milk which are crucial foods for children," said Ala, another local resident. Many people said many goods on the shelves are not urgently needed, but the vitally needed basic supplies are too expensive to buy. "The market is not as prosperous as it was before the war. Prices are outrageously high, beyond what people can tolerate. Although there are some goods in the market, they are not what people really need. These goods cannot meet the basic needs of the people. Most goods are actually non-essential, while the basic supplies we truly need are too expensive and far exceed what consumers can afford," said Hani, a local resident.
