Gaza’s sick children still await medical evacuation despite ceasefire
SHOTLIST:
KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE (NOV. 11, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL)
1. VARIOUS OF SICK CHILDREN AT NASSER HOSPITAL WAITING TREATMENT
2. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OF, JUDY HANOUN, SPEAKING TO REPOTER, SAYING:
[...] "As her condition worsened, she developed severe chest problems and now relies on an oxygen cylinder. She has lung damage and we urgently need to travel for treatment. I applied for medical evacuation more than a year ago, but nothing has happened.
I lost another daughter to the same disease. Her name was Jannah Hanoun, and she died from the same condition. She was also transferred abroad, but it was too late, and she passed away. We hope the Rafah crossing will open soon so we can travel. The doctors say that if Judy isn’t transferred, she will face the same fate as her sister and may die like her.
We are suffering from a lack of medicine for everything. My daughter cannot sleep at night because there is no treatment available. Her entire body is wounded and inflamed, and they say there is no medicine for her here. She doesn’t sleep at night, and neither do I because of her condition."
3. MEDICAL RECORD (TWO SHOTS)
4. VARIOUS OF SICK CHILD YARA AL-GULE
5. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OF, YARA AL-GULE, SPEAKING TO REPOTER, SAYING:
"She has a severe illness affecting both of her lungs. We had taken shelter in a school in the south after being displaced, and the classroom we were in was hit. As a result of the attack, her lungs were damaged.
She constantly needs oxygen and relies on it around the clock. If the oxygen runs out, she can suffocate. She has been admitted to intensive care many times. Doctors cannot diagnose her condition here because there is no proper equipment and no medications.
They suspect several conditions but do not know exactly what she has. They suspect high blood acidity, immune deficiency, and lung fibrosis. She needs a lung biopsy to determine the cause, but this is not available in Gaza.
A medical referral was issued more than nine months ago, but it is as if it exists only on paper. There has been no progress, no follow-up, and no communication. Her condition gets worse with every delay, and the risk increases if her oxygen supply is interrupted.
This is the case for many patients in Gaza who are still waiting for medical transfers. Many children have already died while waiting, and I am afraid my daughter may face the same fate."
6. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DR. AHMED AL-FARRA, HEAD OF PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT AT NASSER HOSPITAL, SPEAKING TO REPOTER, SAYING:
[...] "We are talking about approximately 5,000 children out of a total of 18,000 patients waiting for medical evacuation outside the Gaza Strip.
Unfortunately, I must admit that these patients are dying one after another because medical transfers outside Gaza are not possible." KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - NOV. 11, 2025: Dozens of children at Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis continue to wait for medical evacuation abroad, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
One month after the truce went into effect, no significant change has eased the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, apart from the halt in bombardments. During the fighting, closed border crossings prevented patients from seeking treatment abroad, and hopes raised by the ceasefire have since faded.
At Nasser Hospital’s pediatric ward, children suffering from various illnesses wait in despair. Doctors warn that restrictions on medical referrals put their lives at serious risk.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Farra, head of the pediatric department at Nasser Hospital, said Gaza’s health system has collapsed after two years of blockade and bombardment, making radiology, laboratory tests, and even some surgeries impossible to perform due to equipment shortages and a lack of medicines.
“We are talking about approximately 5,000 children out of a total of 18,000 patients waiting for medical evacuation outside the Gaza Strip,” Al-Farra told reporters. “Unfortunately, I must admit that these patients are dying one after another because medical transfers outside Gaza are not possible.”
Eight-year-old Judy Hanoun has been waiting nearly 10 months to leave Gaza for treatment. She suffers from immune deficiency and lung complications. Her mother, Muna Hanoun, who previously lost another daughter to the same illness, said Judi spends sleepless nights due to painful skin wounds and a lack of medicine.
Four-year-old Yara Al-Gule shares a similar fate. Her mother, Sajida Al-Gule, said the family fled south and sought shelter at a school, which later came under attack, causing severe lung damage to Yara. The child has been admitted to intensive care several times and remains dependent on oxygen support.
The desperate mother said thousands of patients across Gaza face the same situation, most of them children, many of whom have already died. She fears her daughter may be next.
The Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect on Oct. 10, based on a 20-point plan by US President Donald Trump.
Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israel's genocidal war has killed more than 69,000 people and injured more than 170,600, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
