VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS GATHERING OUTSIDE MINISTRY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND FOOD IN ATHENS ATHENS, GREECE - NOV. 11, 2025: Farmers staged a demonstration outside the Ministry of Rural Development and Food in Athens on Tuesday, Nov. 11, protesting delays in subsidy payments and the impact of an ongoing sheep pox outbreak on livestock production.
The protesters first marched to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and then proceeded to the headquarters of OPEKEPE, the public institution under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) over alleged corruption in subsidy payments.
Farmers highlighted rising production costs and demanded the immediate release of delayed government support funds, which have been suspended due to the ongoing corruption probe at OPEKEPE.
Security forces took precautionary measures during the protest.
The EPPO launched its investigation in May over suspected fraud involving subsidies distributed through OPEKEPE. In June, the scandal led to the resignation of one minister and three deputy ministers, while farmer subsidies were temporarily frozen pending further investigation.
Separately, approximately 32,000 small ruminants were culled in the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace since August due to a sheep pox outbreak affecting livestock across the country.
