Plane makes emergency landing following bird strike and engine fire
A plane made an emergency landing following a bird strike that caused an engine fire during its takeoff in Colombia.
The Airbus A320 had departed Guillermo Leon Valencia Airport in Popayan when it encountered a bird strike on its left wing, prompting an emergency diversion to Alfonso Bonilla Aragon International Airport.
Authorities said the plane was bound for Bogota's El Dorado International Airport on November 10 when the incident occurred.
Tracking data shows that the flight with the airline Avianca departed Popayan at 11:52 am local time.
Aviation Safety Network said: 'Avianca flight AV4892, an Airbus A320-214, experienced surges in engine no.2 after takeoff from Popayan Airport (PPN).
'The flight crew elected to divert to nearby Cali (CLO), where a safe landing was made 18 minutes after departure from PPN.'
The aircraft landed safely with no injuries reported.
Bird strikes can cause serious damage to aircraft engines, potentially triggering fires and affecting an aircraft's ability to land safely.
Last year, a Jeju Air plane crash in South Korea became the country's worst aviation disaster, killing at least 179 people on board, with only two survivors.
Flight records show the plane departed Bangkok, Thailand, at 2:29 am before attempting to land at 8:59 am on December 29 in the Jeonnam region of South Korea.
Lee Jeong-hyun, the chief of the Muan Fire Department, stated that a bird strike or adverse weather conditions could have contributed to the crash.
