This is the dramatic moment a rare ‘volnado' formed near the Kilauea volcano as it spewed lava in Hawaii.

Footage shows the volcanic vortex swirling near the fiery flow as molten rocks blasted up to 1,100ft from the crater on November 9.

Authorities said a volnado is a rare whirlwind created by intense heat and rising gases during an eruption, which causes air to spin rapidly near the lava outpour.

This eruption, the 36th since December 23 last year, follows a pattern of brief, explosive episodes. Each lasts around 13 hours and is separated by pauses ranging from one day to nearly two weeks.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
