Cuba: Floodwaters linger in Cuba after Hurricane Melissa
Cuba - November 12, 2025 In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, eastern Cuba remains impacted by flooding and damage. Authorities reported that the country’s longest river, the Cauto, overflowed and trapped residents in high-water zones, requiring rescue operations by boat and military vehicles. In some areas, the storm dropped more than 380 mm of rain, inundating homes up to their roofs and isolating communities in provinces such as Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Holguín. Though over 735,000 people were evacuated prior to landfall, the reconstruction of roads, bridges and power infrastructure is expected to take weeks, potentially months.
