China: Overseas investors' holdings of Chinese A-shares further increase
Storyline: The value of China's A-shares held by overseas investors has increased from over 3 trillion yuan ( about 420 billion U.S. dollars) at the end of 2020 to more than 3.5 trillion yuan (around 490 billion U.S. dollars) so far, as the Chinese capital market continues to expand high-level institutional opening-up, according to the latest data released at the Shanghai Stock Exchange Global Investors Conference on Wednesday. Participants at the conference noted that China's major A-share indexes have risen steadily over the past year. "Currently, the market value held by overseas investors in China's A-share market exceeds 3.5 trillion yuan, making them significant participants in the A-share market. Looking forward, China will open the door to its capital market even wider. We will include more futures and options varieties into the products offered to global investors and make it more convenient for foreign institutions to engage in China's capital market," said Li Ming, vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, in a speech to the event. Wednesday's conference was attended by around 400 representatives from more than 100 global investment institutions to exchange ideas on China's mergers and acquisitions opportunities, tech and innovation-driven growth and high-level opening up. "The focus on high-quality, sustainable growth is something that is going to give confidence to a lot of investment experts overseas coming into the Chinese market," Colin Purdie, global chief investment officer of public markets at Manulife Investment Management, told China Central Television. Participants said that the overall quality and investment value of China's listed companies have continued to improve. A large number of technology leaders have emerged in fields such as new energy and artificial intelligence, forming industrial clusters with increasing technological sophistication and providing high-quality assets that attract global investors. "And you've seen a lot of innovations that's come through as well -- I think of AI, robotics, EVs. That has been transformational for China. So, from a global financial market's perspective, that creates a lot of interest," said Tariq Ahmad, head of Asia Pacific at Franklin Templeton. A recent report from UBS found that overseas investors further increased their holdings of Chinese stocks over the past three quarters, with the top 40 global institutions raising their holdings to 1.1 percent, the highest level since the first quarter of 2023.
