The avalanche of mud, rocks and debris wiped out nearly the entire community of Armero Guayabal in the central department of Tolima, which then had between 25,000 and 29,000 residents.

Around 580 children went missing in the aftermath, many believed to have been separated from their families and taken into irregular adoptions in Colombia and abroad.

Relatives say the symbolic act is both a tribute and a renewed call for information that could help clarify the fate of the missing children.
