Passenger sparks chaos with mid-air bomb threat on flight in Mexico
A passenger caused panic on board a flight in Mexico after making a mid-air bomb threat, forcing the aircraft to divert and make an emergency landing.
Volaris flight Y43382 had taken off from Tijuana International Airport at 3:08 pm local time and was heading towards Veracruz when tensions erupted on November 11.
Local media identified the passenger only as Jonathan.
The situation began with a heated exchange between Jonathan, the cabin crew, and several travellers, before he allegedly claimed he had a bomb and was carrying a firearm.
His claims sent panic through the cabin as frightened passengers looked on.
With the disturbance ongoing, the pilots diverted the Airbus A320 to Monterrey.
Footage from inside the aircraft shows National Guard officers detaining the cap-wearing passenger after he had allegedly threatened staff with a supposed explosive device.
Jonathan was taken into custody once the plane landed. As a precaution, Terminal A at Monterrey Airport was closed for about 45 minutes while authorities checked the area.
Officials later said the incident appeared to be related to a personal matter and that there was no broader threat to passengers or airport operations.
No injuries were reported.
Flight-tracking data indicates that the aircraft later continued its journey and arrived at its destination at 1:43 am.
Whether credible or unfounded, such threats are handled with the highest level of caution due to their potential impact on safety and security.
The standard protocol includes stopping the aircraft, evacuating all passengers, and conducting a thorough search, often involving bomb squads and K-9 units.
