I was studying alone in this burned room with no light other than a tiny lamp. I used to study from 7 a.m. until 12. I took many lessons — English, Arabic, and private lessons. I kept attending classes despite the bombing and the destruction.

DEIR AL-BALAH, GAZA, PALESTINE - NOV. 13, 2025: Despite enduring immense hardship during the Israeli war in Gaza, 18-year-old Rahaf Deabis has achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 91 out of 100 on her high school graduation exam.

Having lost three brothers and being rescued from under the rubble along with other family members after an Israeli attack, Rahaf continued her studies under extremely challenging conditions in her room in Deir Al-Balah.

During the two years of war, when schools were largely disrupted in Gaza, she took private lessons in addition to her regular classes, persisting with her studies despite the bombing and destruction. "I was studying alone in this burned room," she said.

She expressed that her sister and the rest of the family was her greatest support during these challenging times.

Celebrating her success with her mother and sisters, Rahaf also honored her late brothers by hanging their clothes on the wall, symbolically including them in her achievement.

The Palestinian Ministry of Education announced the results of the secondary school exams on Nov. 13, held for the first time in two years due to Israel’s ongoing attacks that have destroyed schools and displaced families.

This year, the exams were conducted electronically for students born in 2007 because of the war’s impact and the extensive damage to educational facilities.

Despite the difficult conditions and limited resources in Gaza, students expressed mixed feelings of pride and sadness over their achievements.

Palestinian Education Minister Amjad Barham said that 31,000 students took part in the exams and emphasized the ministry’s goal to resume in-person education despite the widespread devastation.
