DEIR AL-BALAH, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 14: Authorities in the Gaza Strip buried the bodies of 30 Palestinians on Friday who were handed over by Israel but could not be identified, according to local officials.
The burial in a cemetery in Deir al-Balah was conducted by civil defense and Red Crescent teams, as the number of remains of Palestinians killed in Israeli bombardments or who died in Israeli jails continues to grow.
The process of identifying the deceased has become increasingly difficult, forcing authorities to resort to mass graves. A dedicated "Cemetery for the Unknown" has been established for this purpose, where 38 unidentified bodies received from Israeli custody were recently interred.
The handover of the 30 bodies was part of a body exchange arrangement under the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. In a separate transfer on Monday, Israel returned the remains of 15 more Palestinians.
This marks the 12th such exchange under the current deal, bringing the total number of bodies returned to Gaza to 315 so far. However, the identification process has been severely hampered by the advanced decomposition of the remains and a lack of sufficient forensic equipment in the besieged enclave. To date, only 92 of the returned bodies have been identified.
The Palestinian Wafa News Agency reported that most of the recovered remains showed evidence of torture.
The first phase of the ceasefire deal primarily involves the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The broader plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
According to Gaza's health authorities, Israel has killed more than 69,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,700 others in its military operations in Gaza since October 2023.
