Bombardments everywhere—I saw how everything was devastated. All this destruction has been happening since the last incursion. And today we are with them, trying to return. We want to go back with them… everything is chaos, chaos, chaos."

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 14: The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has deepened as heavy rain and cold temperatures swept through the enclave on Friday, Nov. 14, threatening floods and the collapse of already worn-out shelters.

The adverse weather conditions compound the dire living situation for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the recent conflict.

For families like the six-member Ramadan household in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, winter has meant taking refuge in the remnants of their bomb-damaged home. They use scraps of cloth and plastic sheets in a desperate attempt to shield themselves from the cold and rain.

Other residents describe an existence amid total devastation.

"I can see the destruction everywhere—everything is destroyed," said Ramadan Muhammad Abdallah Hammad, who lives with his family in the rubble of their home. "The situation is extremely hard — unbearable."

He detailed the misery brought by the rain: "In the morning, the whole room was flooded; everything was soaked with water... All the mattresses were full of water, and we couldn't sleep at all. We’re afraid [the ceiling] might collapse on us... There's no life left here."

The scale of destruction across Gaza is vast. According to the Gaza Media Office, 90% of the civilian infrastructure has been destroyed. The data indicates that 268,000 housing units have been completely destroyed, with an additional 148,000 severely damaged and uninhabitable. Initial estimates put the total losses at approximately $70 billion.

Palestinian authorities have warned of the dangers of staying in structurally compromised buildings, which are at high risk of flooding or collapse during rainfall.

The situation in makeshift tent camps is equally precarious. The Gaza Media Office estimates that 93% of all displacement tents—125,000 out of 135,000—are no longer suitable for shelter, having been damaged by weather and the conflict.

Displaced families fear a repeat of the past two rainy seasons, where tents were flooded or torn apart by strong winds.

Aid agencies and authorities state that alternatives are unavailable due to Israeli restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid and shelter materials, such as tents and mobile homes, which they say constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement's humanitarian protocol.
