GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 16, 2025: Gaza’s failing sewage system is releasing untreated wastewater into residential areas, raising fears that disease could spread quickly in the enclave.
A UN delegation inspecting accumulated wastewater in the Sheikh Radwan area of eastern Gaza warned recently that camp settlements and hundreds of people face extreme danger if the water overflows.
Experts expect the sewage to sweep away entire tent camps, posing a massive threat to the displaced population if the water spills over.
According to the latest data from the Gaza Media Office, the Israeli genocidal attacks have destroyed 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, with initial losses estimated at around $70 billion.
Destroyed sewage treatment plant and the main wastewater lines drastically accelerate the sewage accumulation while nearly eliminating drainage capacity.
Municipal spokesperson Husni Mennal issued an urgent call for international organizations to intervene, stating that the local authorities are severely behind in draining the water due to insufficient resources.
Mennal warned that the situation presents not only an environmental hazard but also a direct threat to life, and that diseases would become uncontrollable if the wastewater is not immediately cleared.
A displaced Palestinian woman living in the area said it was nearly impossible for her and her husband to remain there due to heart conditions and age, but they had no other place to go, forcing them to stay despite the risk of illness and death.
Alternatives remain unavailable in the enclave due to Israeli restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid.
Authorities say Israel is violating the humanitarian protocol of the ceasefire agreement reached last month by blocking the entry of shelter materials such as tents and mobile homes.
Phase one of the ceasefire deal, based on US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan, includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
Israel has killed more than 69,000 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza since October 2023 and reduced it to rubble.
