NEW YORK, US - NOV. 17, 2025: Sotheby’s, one of the world’s oldest and largest auction houses, will auction “America,” the solid gold toilet created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in New York.

Cattelan’s 18-karat gold sculpture, fully functional when first displayed at the Guggenheim Museum, gained worldwide attention for its satirical commentary on wealth, privilege, and inequality. The artwork became one of the most talked-about contemporary pieces of the past decade.

The auction is expected to draw significant interest due to the sculpture’s notoriety, craftsmanship, and Cattelan’s reputation as a provocative conceptual artist. Sotheby’s has not released an estimated price.

Founded in 1744, Sotheby’s is a leading global marketplace for art, luxury items, and rare collectibles, with major salerooms in New York, London, Paris, and Hong Kong.
