The Mount Semeru volcano spewed a 54,000ft ash cloud as it erupted in Indonesia today.

Footage shows the pyroclastic ash looming over nearby homes in East Java province at around 4pm local time on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the ash moved north and northwest, with seismic recordings showing a maximum amplitude of 40 mm for more than 16 minutes.

Mukdas Sofian, an officer at the Semeru Observation Post said the column was 'dense and toweirng'.

He added: 'The eruption is still ongoing as the report is being compiled. The danger is at Level II.'

Residents were advised to leave the danger zone.

The Australian Volcanic Ash Advisory has issued a red aviation warning with the public prohibited from engaging in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan.
