LEFKOSA, TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS - NOVEMBER 20, 2025: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides met on Wednesday in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Lefkosa, their first encounter under UN coordination.

The talks, held at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, lasted about 90 minutes. The first part was joined via videoconference by the UN chief’s personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, before the two leaders held a brief one-on-one session.

A UN statement noted that the meeting was coordinated by the UN’s Special Representative and head of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, and took place in a “cordial atmosphere.”

Speaking afterward, Erhurman said the talks were held in a “positive atmosphere,” with both sides outlining their positions, but stressed that “there is currently no atmosphere for a solution on the island.”

He said he presented a 10-point proposal aimed at easing daily life for both sides, including plans for new crossing points and direct phone communication between security forces. He also raised concerns over recent incidents at crossing points, including the burning of a TRNC flag.

The UN said both sides agreed to continue engagement.
