5. PALESTINIAN GIRL ABU ZUBEIDEH CARRYING BIN TO TENT WHERE SHE LIVING GAZA, PALESTINE - NOVEMBER 20: On World Children’s Day, Palestinian children in Gaza continue to endure harsh living conditions in makeshift tents, facing the daily challenges of displacement and conflict.
Children have emerged as the most vulnerable victims in Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.
Growing up in tents with extremely limited resources, the children struggle to access clean water, food, and safe shelter.
Many take on adult responsibilities, standing in long queues for water and meals while caring for younger siblings to help their families survive.
Palestinian Eileen Abu Zubeideh, who lost his father and four siblings in the attacks, lives with his mother Laila in the Bureij Refugee Camp in central Gaza. Eileen has to take on many responsibilities with his mother, from providing drinking water to meeting daily needs.
Her mother Abu Zubeideh described their circumstances as following:
"The children are late for school because they have to wait in line for water. My daughter should be at school right now. Every time it rains, water fills the tents and our belongings get wet. Most of the children in this camp are orphans; there is no one to support them. They are deprived of the opportunities that other children have. The children of Gaza are suffering, and they have a right to life too."
Abu Zubeideh said their only expectation is for their children to have the right to live in peace and security, like children in other parts of the world.
Eileen Abu Zubeideh addressed her peers, saying, “Today is World Children's Day, but instead of celebrating, we are busy carrying water. Children in other countries are in their schools and playgrounds. We, however, are living in tents. I lost my father and brothers. Our only wish is to return to our normal lives one day.”
At least 25 Palestinians were killed and 77 others injured in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the Health Ministry said, marking a new violation of a fragile ceasefire deal in place since last month.
Israel has killed 280 Palestinians and wounded 672 since Oct. 11, according to a Wednesday statement by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, injured over 170,000, and reduced most of the enclave to rubble.
