Brit investigator says Thai military drones 'crossed into Cambodia' despite Trump 'peace deal'
Thai military drones allegedly flew into Cambodia as Thailand suspended a flimsy peace pact brokered by US President Donald Trump.
Several drones were reportedly spotted in Cambodian airspace amid fears of an impending attack on villages in Thmor Da, Pursat, this week.
Investigative journalist Nathan Paul Southern, Operations Director for global investigative team The Eyewitness Project (EWP), said: 'The reason we wanted to go was to have a better understanding from the ground on the claims coming from the Cambodian media that there could be an imminent attack planned by the Thai military into Cambodia at this crossing at any point.
‘Both the Thai and Cambodian governments were denying that there was merit to these claims, but we wanted to get onto the ground and understand better ourselves.
'From speaking to locals in Thmor Da, they explained that in recent weeks and especially in recent days, they have seen a significant increase in Thai drones crossing into Cambodian airspace and taking photos and observing troop movements.
‘We were actually able to independently verify that ourselves as we were speaking to a member of the Cambodian Armed Forces, when we've seen three drones enter Cambodian airspace from Thailand, a further three very soon after that and another one on top of that.
‘So at least seven surveillance drones we've seen entered into Cambodian airspace while we were there within a short period of time.'
Citing Cambodian military sources, Nathan said Thai troops were allegedly encroaching on the preface of de-mining operations, with Cambodian soldiers 'ordered to step back in these situations to allow Thailand to hold the ground that they're moving into.'
He added: ‘They claim that the Thais are trying to frame these as being new landmines laid by the Cambodians, and this is something that they deny.
‘The other claim was that when the Thai troops are inside Thmor Da with these landmine operations and with troop movements, they are also then staying within that new boundary that they create for themselves, and they are not retreating back.
‘So the Cambodian troops in Thmor Da are saying that they are seeing Thais hold new lines of territory inside Cambodia.'
Thailand and Cambodia have been fighting for more than a century over several undemarcated sections of their 817-kilometre (508-mile) border, which was originally mapped by France in 1907 while Cambodia was still its protectorate.
But tensions flared in the long-disputed frontier as both accused each other of instigating violence on July 24, which killed at least 48 and temporarily displaced some 300,000 on both sides of the border.
Cambodia claimed responsibility for the alleged war crime of firing rockets into Thailand that struck a gas station, killing a number of children.
The two nations have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
But the peace deal, brokered by US President Donald Trump, fell through this month as Thailand accused Cambodia of laying fresh landmines, one of which maimed a soldier in Thailand's Sisaket province.
