Latest huge flytip to pollute Britain - 40m long and costing £20k to clean up
Shocking images show the latest huge flytip to pollute Britain - 40m long and costing £20,000 to clean up.
The tonnes of waste have been illegally dumped on a lane - less than a mile from an official recycling site.
The huge rubbish pile - which contains nappies, plastic, pallets, household furniture and plastic tanks - has been discarded along Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth, Bristol.
The mass fly-tip is estimated to reach back 40 metres long and was dumped near Bristol Waste-run household waste centre.
Items containing addresses of residential and businesses were also found in the heap - which is to be analysed as part of an ongoing investigation.
Bristol Waste said the clear-up operation will cost £20,000.
A Bristol city council spokesperson said: "Officers have assessed the site and are now making arrangements for the right equipment to be sent to clear this sizeable and illegal dumping of waste."
"Material that could link the waste to residential and business addresses has been found and will now be analysed as part of an investigation into the source of this fly-tipping."
"If the opportunity arises to prosecute perpetrators we will not hesitate to act."
MD of Bristol Waste, Richard Williams, said the costs of the cleanup will impact the taxpayer.
He told ITV: "I estimate this will cost us £20,000 in disposal costs alone and then there's the the manpower of tidying it up and taking it away"."
Bristol City Council added that fly-tipping on this scale is often linked to unlicensed waste carriers.
The spokesperson explained: "It's important that anyone who is paying someone to take away their waste has appropriate licences in place and can produce evidence of these licences when asked for it."
"Always ask your contractor to evidence their credentials before paying for their services."
Officials are already investigating Britain's biggest ever flytip - 500ft long near the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire.
