The Great Ethiopian Run was officially founded in 2001 by Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie, a multiple record-breaker and Olympic winner, following his return from the Sydney Olympics.
The event has grown to become the largest race in Africa and serves as a symbol of Ethiopia's athletic heritage, aiming to broaden participation beyond elite athletes to unite the nation.
